Maria Sharapova receives a wild card in to the US Open!!
/The US Open kicks off tomorrow!!!! And the United States Tennis Association has awarded Maria Sharapova a wild card to enter the main draw!!! This will be her first Grand Slam tournament since serving her 15-month suspension for doping.
Miss Maria was not offered a wild-card spot by French Open officials, and she also missed this year’s Wimbledon after pulling out of its qualifying tournament with an injury.
Because she returned to the tour this year without a ranking, and has only been able to raise her ranking to 148th because of injury struggles, sharapova has pretty much been at the mercy of the tournaments to award her wild cards in order to play. And, I think as we all know, whether or not she should receive these wild cards in to the slams has been quite the controversial topic . . .to say the least.
U.S.T.A. officials said her status as a past champion, Sharapova won the U.S. Open in 2006, helped make her case to play this year.
No Serena, No Azarenka, No Novak, No Nishikori, No Wawrinka . . .and now No Murray!!! Perhaps ticket sales played a part in this decision as well? Hey, I’m not sayin I’m mad at it! Im just sayin!
Sharapova has seemingly been having some serious struggles with injuries lately, and as a result really pulling back on the tournament reigns in order to be rested and ready for this US Open. I think she might be pretty laser focused on proving a point in Flushing Meadows.
I will be headed to the US Open starting tomorrow, and personally can’t wait to see what goes down on and off of the court as a result of this decision!
In the meantime, lets hear some thoughts about this decision because I know you guys have got them!
